Take time to celebrate the fact that on this day in 1923 the first issue of the weekly periodical TIME appeared on newsstands. The first issue was 32 pages and featured a charcoal sketch of House Speaker Joseph Gurney ‘Uncle Joe’ Cannon on the cover. It was the United States’ first modern news magazine (circulation of 3,700). The format of the worldwide news weekly, founded by Henry Luce and Briton Hadden, became standard for most other general newsmagazines, consisting of dozens of short articles tersely summarizing information on subjects of importance and general interest and arranged in “departments” covering such fields as national and international affairs, business, education, science, medicine, law, religion, sports, books, and the arts.
TIME is printed in several languages and is among the most popular magazines in history (circulation is still around 3 million). The magazine is published in New York City.
