It was on this day in 1860 that the
device which, officially, is a "covered gimlet screw with a 'T' handle"
or, corkscrew, was patented by M. L. Byrn of New York City. Hooray for
M. L.!
After all, if it wasn't for the invention of the corkscrew we'd be
pulling corks out of those wine bottles with our teeth ... and what
would the sommeliers use?
