1761 - The first life insurance policy issued in the United States was issued on this day. Can you think which company it was? Nope. Don’t even try. You’ll never guess. It was the Corporation for the Relief of Poor and Distressed Presbyterian Ministers and of the Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers. WOW-Zers! We wonder how long the policy must have been...1819 - The steamship Savannah was the first to cross the Atlantic. It sailed from Savannah, Georgia to Liverpool, England. 1841 - Henry Kennedy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was lounging around the house when the mailman rang his doorbell (or cranked it, since electricity wasn’t even available, yet ... or, heck, maybe he just knocked on the door. 1849 - Abraham Lincoln received patent number 6469 for his floating dry dock.
1868 - The masked Reno Gang pulled off the great train robbery at Marshfield, IN. They hauled in $96,000 in loot.
1900 - Allen DeVilbiss, Jr. of Toledo, OH patented his pendulum-type computing scale. Many are still around. Check out your nearest produce stand at the market.
1900 - Edwin S. Votey of Detroit, MI patented his pianola: a pneumatic piano player. The device could be attached to any piano. Batteries not included.
1927 - A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Gulang, Kansu in the Republic of China. Over 40,000 people were killed.
1931 - From the Mmmm, Good! file: The Floridian Products Corporation of Arcadia offered its product for sale. Was it orange juice, rattlesnake meat, sectioned grapefruit or alligator purses? If you said rattlesnake meat, you were looking a line ahead and were cheating, but that is the correct answer!
1939 - Representatives of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini signed the Pact of Steel, committing Germany and Italy to a military alliance.
1942 - Ted Williams was sworn into the U.S. Navy. He returned to the Boston Red Sox in 1946 and took up where he had left off, leading the team to the World Series, and winning the MVP crown.
1943 - The first operational jet fighter was tested. The German Me262 first flew on this day.
1947 - U.S. President Harry S Truman signed into law the Truman Doctrine. Enacted by the U.S. Congress in response to a request by Truman, the law appropriated military and economic aid for Greece and Turkey.
1947 - The first ballistic missile was fired. It was a U.S. Army Corporal missile, fired at White Sands proving Grounds, NM.
1955 - Jack Benny signed off his last live network radio broadcast after a run of 23 years. Mr. Benny was devoting his time fully to TV. His program brought many of his old cronies to TV as well: announcer Don Wilson; bandleader Phil Harris; Eddie ‘Rochester’ Anderson; singer Dennis Day; and Benny’s wife, Mary Livingstone.
1958 - Singer Jerry Lee Lewis announced his marriage to his 14-year-old cousin, Myra. The resulting controversy caused Lewis to be booed off the stage in London and forced the cancellation of all but three of the 37 scheduled concerts on his British tour.
1961 - Ernie K-Doe, aka Ernest Kador Jr., joined the growing list of one hit wonders (recording artists who had only one hit song). Mother-In-Law was Ernie’s one hit, and a number one tune on U.S. pop music charts.
1965 - The Beatles got their eighth consecutive number one listing as Ticket to Ride rode to the top of the singles list. The song topped the charts for one week.
1966 - Bruce Springsteen recorded his very first song, along with his band, The Castilles. It was titled, That’s What You Get. The song was never released. Bruce was just practicing. He was just sixteen...
1967 - What was to become the Public Broadcasting System’s longest-running children’s program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, debuted on this day.
1967 - The final To Tell the Truth program was seen on CBS-TV. It had been on the air for over 10 years. The show began syndication sometime later, in a slightly different format.
1970 - The Guess Who from the Winnipeg, Canada area earned a gold record for both the album and single, American Woman. It would be one of three million-seller awards for the group. Their other hits included, These Eyes, Laughing and No Sugar Tonight. The group, which dates back to 1963, disbanded in 1975, with several reunions since then. From the Additional Information You Probably Didn’t Need To Know department: Randy Bachman played lead guitar before leaving the group in August, 1970 to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Burton Cummings was lead singer starting in 1966.
1972 - The first U.S. president to visit Moscow did so on this day. President Richard Nixon met with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
1973 - U.S. President Richard M. Nixon admitted to a White House role in the Watergate cover-up, citing national security.
1979 - Canadians went to the polls in parliamentary elections that put the Joe Clark’s Progressive Conservatives in power. The election ended the 11- year tenure of Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
1985 - GTE Corporation (General Telephone and Electronics) was named by Fortune magazine as the largest utility in the U.S. In the same issue of Fortune, Sears was named as the nation’s largest retailer for the 21st year in a row.
1986 - Sylvester Stallone agreed to a 10-picture, six-year deal with United Artists. He signed for a reported $15 million for each film. The deal made him the richest actor in Hollywood.
1989 - India test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile, igniting worries over nuclear proliferation and starting a spiraling arms race on the subcontinent.
1992 - Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show for the last time. It was the end of three decades of late nights spent with Carson and his sidekick, Ed McMahon and bandleader, Doc Severinsen. Comedian Jay Leno replaced Carson.
1993 - More than 40,000 fans packed a heavily-secured park along Tel Aviv’s beachfront to see Guns N’ Roses kick off a 15-country European tour. Tickets were $43 - the highest price for a rock concert in Israel.
1995 - Photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope this day showed two new moons in Saturn’s orbit. The discovery was made by astronomers Amanda S. Bosh and Andrew S. Rivkin.
1996 - Mission: Impossible, starring Tom Cruise and Jon Voight, opened in theaters across the U.S. The film, also starring Emmanuelle Béart, Henry Czerny, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Kristin Scott Thomas and Vanessa Redgrave, broke the $100-million box-office mark eleven days later.
1997 - The U.S. Postal Service released a Bugs Bunny commemorative stamp. Bugs was the first animated character to appear on a U.S. postage stamp.
1998 - Voters in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland turned out in large numbers to cast ballots giving resounding vote in favor of peace in violence-torn Ulster. The vote paved the way for a power-sharing deal designed to end decades of sectarian strife. 3,600 people had died since violence erupted in British-ruled Northern Ireland in 1969.
1998 - These films debuted in the U.S.: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro, and The Opposite of Sex, with Christina Ricci, Martin Donovan, Lisa Kudrow, Lyle Lovett, Johnny Galecki, William Lee Scott, Ivan Sergei, Megan Blake, Colin Ferguson, Dan Bucatinsky, Chauncey Leopardi, Rodney Eastman and Heather Fairfield.
1998 - Actor, director John Derek died in Santa Maria, CA. He had been married to Pati Behrs, Ursula Andress, Linda Evans and Bo Derek.
2000 - The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law that shielded children from sex-oriented cable TV channels.
2001 - Ford Motor Company announced plans to spend more than $2 billion to replace some 13 million Firestone tires on its vehicles because of safety concerns.
2002 - The remains of Chandra Levy, the federal intern who had disappeared more than a year earlier, were found in a Washington DC park.
2002 - A jury in Birmingham, Alabama, convicted former Ku Klux Klansman Bobby Frank Cherry of murder in a 1963 church bombing that killed four black girls.
2003 - Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich signed a bill that reduced criminal penalties for seriously ill people who smoke marijuana to a maximum $100 (with no jail time).
2003 - NASA released the first photo of Earth taken from Mars, 86 million miles away.
2004 - Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe married former TV anchorwoman Letizia Ortiz, the first commoner in line to be queen in Spanish history.
2004 - Filmmaker Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, a scathing indictment of White House actions after the Sep 11 attacks, won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
2005 - The United Nations condemned as “utterly unacceptable” the abuse of detainees at a U.S. air base (Bagram) in Afghanistan.
2006 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that police without a warrant could enter a home to break up a fight, overturning three Utah court rulings.
2007 - Iran raised gasoline prices by 25%, and the government said it was ready to begin rationing fuel.
2008 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth in the Indiana Jones film series, opened in the U.S. The action adventure stars Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Shia LaBeouf.
2008 - The U.S. Congress enacted a massive election-year farm bill over the veto of President George Bush (II). The law created new, and bigger, subsidies for farmers.
2009 - New movies in U.S. theatres: Dance Flick, with Damon Wayans Jr., Craig Wayans, Shoshana Bush, Essence Atkins and Affion Crockett; Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, starring Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Owen Wilson, Ed Helms, Christopher Guest, Jon Bernthal, Bill Hader, Alain Chabat, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon; and Tormented, starring Alex Pettyfer, April Pearson, Larissa Wilson, Mary Nighy and Dimitri Leonidas.
2009 - U.S. President Obama signed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act, saying it was a turning point for American consumers by ending the days of unfair rate hikes and hidden fees.
2010 - Air India Express Flight 812, a Boeing 737–800, trying to land at a tricky hilltop runway at Mangalore in southern India, overshot the runway, crashed over a cliff and burst into flames at dawn, killing 158 people. There were 8 survivors. An investigative panel later found that the pilot had slept through more than half the flight and was disoriented during landing.
2010 - Jordan Romero (13), an eighth-grader from California, became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Everest, surpassing the previous record set by Temba Tsheri (16) of Nepal.
2011 - The Cannes Film Festival awarded its top prize to the drama Tree of Life, by Terence Malick. Kirsten Dunst won the best actress prize for Melancholia. Jean Dujardin claimed the best actor prize for the silent film The Artist.
2011 - A tornado tore a 6-mile path across southwestern Missouri, killing 154 people as it slammed into the city of Joplin. The storm left a forest of splintered tree trunks behind where entire neighborhoods once stood. The National Weather Service said it was the single deadliest twister in 60 years.
2012 - Russia’s President Vladimir Putin targeted those who opposed him by introducing new fines for protesters and handing out Kremlin jobs to widely his lieutenants. The new law imposed a 200-fold increase in fines for taking part in unsanctioned protests. And police rounded up several members of the liberal Yabloko party who attempted to protest the new law outside parliament.
2013 - U.S. Army Secretary John McHugh and Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno told a Senate panel that they were addressing, as their top priority, the service’s sexual harassment and sexual assault problems. This, as they reported that a sergeant had been accused of videotaping female cadets in the showers at West Point. (In March 2014 Sgt. First Class Michael McClendon pled guilty to the videotaping and was sentenced to 33 months’ confinement.)
2014 - The U.S. FBI issued arrest warrants for 16 police officers in Puerto Rico on charges of corruption. In August 2014 all 16 pleaded guilty. The officers had used their affiliation with law enforcement to commit robbery and extortion, to manipulate court records in exchange for bribes, and to sell illegal narcotics.
2015 - Films opening in the U.S. included: Poltergeist, with Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris and Rosemarie DeWitt; Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie; The Human Centipede 3, with Eric Roberts, Bree Olson and Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister; and Sunshine Superman starring John B. Macaulay, Marah and John Long.
2015 - Irish voters backed same-sex marriage by a margin of 62.1%, making it the first country to adopt same-sex marriage via a popular vote.
2015 - 23-year-old Jordan James Kirby of Paradise (near Sacramento, CA) was sentenced to 29 years in federal prison for tricking young girls on Facebook into sending him explicit photographs of themselves and then using the pictures to extort them.
2016 - POTUS Barack Obama arrived on his first (and only) visit to Vietnam. The trip was meant to help with the transformation of an old enemy into a new partner -- and to help the U.S. counter China’s growing assertiveness in the region.
2017 - POTUS Donald Trump arrived in Israel on a visit to Jerusalem’s Western Wall. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara escorted the American president and first lady across the red carpet after they left Air Force One, the Netanyahus walked hand in hand, but when Trump reached for his wife’s hand, she did not respond. Never one to take rejection well, Trump grabbed her hand. The first lady promptly shook it loose.
2018 - China jailed Tibetan businessman Tashi Wangchuk for five years for “inciting separatism,” after he advocated the use of Tibetan in schools and was featured in international media reports. Wangchuk was an advocate for the teaching of the Tibetan language after Tibetan classes were closed down in his local area, prompting concerns that future generations of Tibetans would grow up unable to speak their mother tongue.
2018 - A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched a pair of U.S.-German science satellites and five commercial communications satellites into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in southern California. NASA contributed $430 million to the new mission and the German contribution was €77 million.
2019 - British and Japanese mobile phone companies said that they were putting on hold plans to sell new devices from Chinese company, Huawei. This, in the latest fallout from U.S. tech restrictions aimed at Huawei.
2019 - A U.S. federal judge ruled that Qualcomm unlawfully squeezed out cellphone chip rivals and charged excessive royalties to manufacturers. The judge ordered Qualcomm to renegotiate licensing deals with customers, license its patents to rival chip makers at fair prices, and stop signing exclusive supply agreements with smartphone makers, like Apple, that block competitors from access to that market.
2020 - Movies scheduled to open in the U.S. (many theatres were still closed by the Covid-19 crisis) included: Survive the Night, starring Bruce Willis, Chad Michael Murray and Lydia Hull; The Trip to Greece, with Kareem Alkabbani, Marta Barrio and Rob Brydon; and Military Wives, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Sharon Horgan and Emma Lowndes.
2020 - Actress Lori Loughlin pleaded guilty to paying half a million dollars to get her two daughters enrolled at the University of Southern California. Her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, also pleaded guilty. The couple was accused of paying consultant Rick Singer $500,000 to get their daughters into the University of Southern California as rowing recruits.
2020 - COVID-19 news:
1)Hollywood producer William Sadleir was arrested. The former chairman and CEO of Aviron Pictures, was accused of defrauding the government of millions of dollars meant for coronavirus relief, and of using nearly $30 million in investor funds for his personal use — including his buying a $14-million Beverly Hills Mansion.
2)Car rental company Hertz filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid the economic fallout from the global pandemic.
3)China dropped its annual growth target for the first time and pledged more government spending as the pandemic hammered the world’s second-largest economy.
4)Total cases in the U.S. reached ablut 1.6 million with the death toll at 96,000.2021 - Virgin Galactic, British billionaire Richard Branson’s private spaceship company, completed its first manned space flight from its new home port in New Mexico. Branson founded the company in 2004 and this was the third time his company reported reaching space.
2021 - Twenty six countries competed in the final Eurovision song contest in the Netherlands, vying for votes in the world’s most popular live music event, which returns after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Maneskin won the Eurovision Song Contest. Their song Zitti E Buoni beat 25 other acts from across Europe to bring the title home for Italy. France came in second, and Switzerland came in third.
2022 - At the PGA Championship (May 19–22 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, OK) Justin Thomas edged Will Zalatoris by 1 stroke in a 3-hole playoff after 54-hole leader Mito Pereira double bogeyed the 72nd hole.
2022 - U.S. Southern Baptists released a scathing report on sexual abuse in the largest U.S. Protestant denomination. The report showed details of 20 years of allegations that were either ignored or covered up by top clergy -- and stories of how some of those leaders mistreated victims of abuse.
2023 - A deal cutting water usage of the Colorado River was agreed to by California, Arizona and Nevada -- aiings to save some 3 million acre-feet of water by 2026.
