Charley Eckman aka The Coach
WCBM [Baltimore MD] 1965
WFBR [Baltimore] 1970-1987
Now: Charley's granddaughter, Priscilla Eckman Thomas, says (12/06),
"Charley Eckman, The Coach, had a career in sports both as a player, coach (he coached
the Fort Wayne and Detroit Pistons 1954-1958), referee (Military, BAA, NBA, ACC) and as
a Sportscaster for WCBM and WFBR in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the voice of the Colts
(with Artie Donovan), the Orioles and Baltimore Blast. He was hard working, loud, brash,
funny, intelligent, truthful (even when it hurt), a great story teller and speaker, a
good friend and a family man. He gave so much to the city of Baltimore where he was
born and raised. He stayed true to his roots, his town. His career was as colorful
as the sweaters he wore, and almost every one loved "Choley," "The Coach!" I should know,
I'm his only granddaughter. Unfortunately, for Baltimore, his fans, friends and family,
Charley "called a cab to heaven" on July 3, 1995, after a hard-fought match with cancer.
I can still smell his cigar smoke..." Click for more on
